The Metropolitan Museum of Art – Millefleurs Unicorn Silk Twill Neckerchief | Inspired by The Unicorn Rests in a Garden | Museum Exclusive
Few medieval masterpieces have captured the imagination as profoundly as The Unicorn Rests in a Garden, one of the most celebrated treasures of The Met Cloisters and among the finest surviving tapestries of the late Middle Ages.
This elegant silk twill neckerchief transforms that extraordinary work of art into a wearable museum masterpiece.
Its enchanting millefleurs (\"thousand flowers\") design is inspired by the richly detailed botanical background of the original tapestry, woven between 1495 and 1505 in France and the Southern Netherlands using luxurious wool, silk, silver and gilt wefts. Every inch of the original textile is alive with flowers, herbs and foliage, creating one of the most remarkable botanical landscapes in medieval art.
At the heart of the composition rests the legendary unicorn, peacefully enclosed within a flowering garden and loosely tethered to a flourishing pomegranate tree. Medieval symbolism gives every element profound meaning. The unicorn has long represented purity, faithful love and spiritual renewal, while the pomegranate signifies marriage, fertility and abundance. Many of the surrounding plants—including wild orchid, bistort and thistle—were believed during the Middle Ages to possess fertility-enhancing properties, making the tapestry a richly layered celebration of love, hope and new life.
Although The Unicorn Rests in a Garden can be appreciated as a complete masterpiece in its own right, it is traditionally regarded as the final work in the celebrated Unicorn Tapestries, one of the most important surviving textile cycles of medieval Europe.
The original entered The Metropolitan Museum of Art through the generous Gift of John D. Rockefeller Jr. in 1937, where it remains one of the defining treasures of The Met Cloisters, New York\'s internationally renowned museum devoted to medieval art and architecture.
Produced exclusively for The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this luxurious 100% silk twill scarf faithfully captures the tapestry\'s jewel-like colours, intricate botanical detail and timeless elegance, allowing one of history\'s greatest textile masterpieces to be worn and enjoyed today.
