He said he had these fuzz tones that were kind of harsh, but they were round. Plus, he has a wah-wah, curly cords, and he said that Jimi was wearing a high school marching band jacket. Ronny was the only one who walked right up and went to the front of the stage to see f*cking Jimi Hendrix. What a trip--Mike Watt (reflecting on his friend Ron Ashton\'s retelling of seeing Hendrix perform)
Welcome back to another entry into the new slim_punk series, \"But where they really punk?\" And, for this one, the answer is somewhat less ambiguous than the others in this series. If we\'re being absolutely technical, then the Jimi Hendrix Experience might fit more neatly into the subgenre of \"psychedelic rock\"--fine. Regardless, this band\'s lasting influence on punk rock cannot be denied. JHE was actually an American-British hybrid, formed in London in 1966. Fronted by none other than the great Jimi Hendrix, this band fused blues, jazz, rock, and soul with British avant-garde; and, in so doing, they reenergized and redefined the totality of rock \'n\' roll writ large. There\'s a reason, for example, why Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers got a portrait of Hendrix on his upper left arm. Now, regardless of what you think of the Chili Peppers, try to imagine the following for a minute. Bands like the Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth, The Melvins, The Flaming Lips, The Stooges, Nirvana--what would they have sounded like but for Hendrix? Would they even have formed in the first place? Granted, counterfactuals are hard, but Hendrix\'s influence on punk is all but undeniable. One could even argue that--aside from being one of the first alt-rock legends--Hendrix was actually among the first \"punks\" in the purest sense of the word. After all, punk is--as you surely know--a countercultural movement, and the counterculture was all about challenging the status quo. And, as the epigraph above clearly indicates, The Jimi Hendrix Experience had an indisputable influence on the Stooges, who had a major influence on the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Damned, and so forth. The lineage just went on and on. No one would deny, for example, the influence of punk on grunge--and what would grunge have been but for Jimi Hendrix? I rest my case.
Now, about the tee. For those of you loyal followers, you know damned well that I only list what I would personally wear--and this is no exception. This is an OG \"Heathknit\"--a long-since defunct brand that was all the rage back in the late 70s from which this tee certainly hails. Honestly, it doesn\'t really get any better than this: it feels like butter: so soft that you actually have to don it to believe it: nothing creasing, nothing flaring--just vintage-y goodness all the way down. And the graphic speaks for itself. This is a \"total fan\" tee for \"The Jimi Hendrix Experience\" itself, not just the solo artist. Simply put, your boy ain\'t gonna just wear any old tee out to the dive bar. This thing is an absolute f*cking heater, amazingly well-preserved considering that it may even be older than I am (which is saying a lot). One of the most influential bands of all time, let alone the numerous subgenres of rock \'n\' roll that lay in its wake. Unimpeachably punk.
