RARE ORIGINAL 1963 LILLY PULITZER PINK PINEAPPLE SHIFT DRESS

This rare original 1963 Lilly Pulitzer dress is one of my favorite vintage pieces and one I never imagined selling.

Originally sold through Lord & Taylor on Fifth Avenue in New York, the dress still retains its original Lord & Taylor and Lilly Pulitzer labels. I discovered it decades later at Current Vintage in Nantucket and purchased it to wear to the Opera House Gala following the Opera House Cup Regatta. I have worn it only two or three times since.

Crafted from 100% cotton, the dress features Lilly Pulitzer’s iconic pink pineapple print in a classic sleeveless shift silhouette. The vivid color, whimsical print, and effortless shape beautifully capture the American resort style for which Lilly Pulitzer became legendary.

What makes this dress truly extraordinary is its spectacular open crocheted pineapple lace hem. Extending approximately 8 to 10 inches below the printed cotton dress, the dimensional crochet creates a remarkable architectural border while repeating the pineapple motif found in the fabric above.

In all my years of collecting exceptional clothing, I have never encountered another early Lilly Pulitzer dress with this particular design detail.

The original metal back zipper, period labels, cotton construction, and elaborate crocheted hem make this an exceptional surviving example of early Lilly Pulitzer design. It is highly collectible while remaining entirely wearable.

I had hoped to save the dress for my daughter, Emma, but she has already grown too tall to wear it as originally intended. Rather than keep it tucked away, I would love to place it in the hands of someone who appreciates rare vintage fashion, American resort style, and exceptional craftsmanship.

CONDITION

Excellent vintage condition, particularly considering its age.

I have worn the dress only two or three times during my ownership, and it has otherwise been carefully stored. The colors remain wonderfully bright, the printed cotton presents beautifully, and the elaborate crocheted pineapple hem is exceptionally well preserved.
