Exceptional antique deadstock knit stocking cap manufactured for the Gauss-Langenberg Hat Company of St. Louis, dating to approximately 1901–1918.
Commercially knit in a cream or natural-colored yarn with two pale blue-gray stripes, a coordinating pom-pom and a wide fold-over cuff. Retains its original Gauss-Langenberg paper stock tag marked “Gem Patent,” style/model 1401, with handwritten “35 cts” price notation and an additional period price marking.
New old stock/deadstock condition, apparently never worn. Remarkably well preserved for an item more than a century old, with minor age- and storage-related patina possible. The original paper tag displays expected age and handling wear. Please review all photographs carefully for the complete condition.
Approximate measurements:
Opening: 6\" across laid flat and unstretched
Length: 7.5\" including the pom-pom
The knit construction provides some natural stretch, but there is no labeled size. Based on the measurements, this appears most appropriate as a child or youth size. Please refer to the measurement photographs and compare against a similar well-fitting hat when determining suitability.
Fiber content is not identified and is therefore listed as unknown. This is believed to be a civilian sporting or winter cap; no claim is made that it was military issue.
