Antique Victorian Black Skirt Ruffled Hem 24” Waist Pocket Mourning 1800s For Sale

Beautiful Victorian black skirt with a wonderfully full silhouette and deep ruffled hem. Constructed from a finely woven black cotton with a subtle sheen. The skirt is generously gathered into a narrow waistband measuring approximately 24 inches. The waistband is trimmed in polished brown cotton and closes with a hook and eye. A particularly nice period detail is the pocket, which is lined in matching polished brown cotton.The lower portion of the skirt is finished with a wide gathered section and multiple rows of ruffling, creating a dramatic, sweeping silhouette.Waist measures approximately 24 inches. Waist to hem measures approximately 39 inches.Good overall antique condition showing wear consistent with its age. There are approximately four tears to the back of the skirt that are mostly lost in the fabric. Three are quite small; one is larger and measures approximately 1 1/2 inches (please see last photograph). There is also some minor damage and wear to the ruffles, and a few scattered very small stains. A beautiful surviving piece of Victorian clothing with tremendous visual presence, suitable for an antique fashion or textile collection, historical study, display, costuming, or a dramatic period wardrobe.
